Install Highball
Highball is a free, open-source Mac app. It is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens without any warnings when you download it the normal way.
Requirements
- Apple Silicon (M1 or newer). Intel Macs are not supported.
- macOS 14 Sonoma or newer.
- Around 8 GB of free space for the engine and a first bottle, plus whatever your games need.
- Rosetta 2, which macOS installs for you the first time it is needed.
Download
Open the disk image, drag Highball to Applications, and launch it. That is the whole installation. The app updates itself from then on.
First launch
Highball walks you through downloading a Wine engine, which takes a few minutes on a normal connection. The engine is assembled from pinned upstream releases, each one checked against a recorded SHA-256, so you get exactly the build that was tested. After that you create a bottle, install Steam or connect Epic with one click, and your library appears with a compatibility verdict on each game.
Uninstalling
Drag the app to the Trash. Everything else lives in
~/Library/Application Support/Highball, which holds your engines, bottles and games. Delete that
folder too if you want the disk space back, but note that your installed games live inside it.
If macOS says it cannot verify the app
That means the download was damaged in transit, almost always by a third-party unarchiver. Here is what happened and how to fix it.
