Install Highball
Highball is a free, open-source Mac app. It is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens without any warnings when you download it the normal way.
Requirements
- Apple Silicon (M1 or newer). Intel Macs are not supported.
- macOS 14 Sonoma or newer.
- Around 8 GB of free space for the engine and the Windows environment, plus whatever your games need.
- Rosetta 2, which macOS installs for you the first time it is needed.
Download
Open the disk image, drag Highball to Applications, and launch it. That is the whole installation. The app updates itself from then on.
Or with Homebrew:
brew install --cask highballHighball is in the official Homebrew cask repository, so that is the whole command. The app still
updates itself afterwards, which is why brew upgrade usually has nothing to do.
First launch
Press Get started. Highball installs Rosetta if your Mac lacks it, downloads the Wine engine (a few minutes on a normal connection) and prepares one Windows environment for your games. The engine is assembled from pinned upstream releases, each one checked against a recorded SHA-256, so you get exactly the build that was tested. Then the library asks where your games are: install Steam, connect Epic, or pick a Windows program you already have. Your games appear with a compatibility verdict on each one, and every game's page says what Play will do before you press it.
Environments, the engine and troubleshooting live in Settings (⌘,). You never need them to play a game.
Uninstalling
Drag the app to the Trash. Everything else lives in
~/Library/Application Support/Highball, which holds the engine, your Windows environments and your games. Delete that
folder too if you want the disk space back, but note that your installed games live inside it.
If macOS says it cannot verify the app
That means the download was damaged in transit, almost always by a third-party unarchiver. Here is what happened and how to fix it.
