Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Reported | 1 report |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Untested | no report yet — send one |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
The demo of Aethermancer, a Unity 2022.3 game by moi rai games. Reported about 95 percent smooth at 100 fps over an hour and a half on DXMT with the Wine 11 engine, with short frame hiccups here and there, one of them a drop of about 2 seconds, which do not matter in the turn-based play. The run went through Proton-ish from the macOS Steam client, not through Highball itself. Nothing was measured here.
Known issues
Short frame hiccups here and there, one a drop of about 2 seconds (reported on an M3 Max, macOS 26.6.2, DXMT, Wine 11 engine r27, through Proton-ish)

Provenance
Reported by MagnusPladsen (highball-db#626, 2026-10-22), Apple M3 Max, macOS 26.6.2, not through the Highball app but through Proton-ish 1.0.1 (HighballKit 0.10.15, highball-db f2c34a9ff6da) from the macOS Steam client, the Wine 11 engine x64-crossover26.3-r27, DXMT, msync off, Retina off, rated 4 of 5 after 90 minutes. Not verified by the maintainer.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Aethermancer Demo work on Mac?
Aethermancer Demo has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
