Which renderer to use

Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.

No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.

Notes

Reported perfect on the default Wine 10 engine twice, once in DXVK mode over 5 minutes and once in Wine's own Direct3D mode over 21 minutes, both with Emulate display mode changes on, without which the game's resolution was wrong. The same player found it slow on the Wine 11 engine. Both modes worked, so the page sets no mode. No measurement here yet.

Provenance

Reported by valdroff (highball-db#404, 2026-10-08), Apple M3, macOS 27.0.1, Highball 0.10.14, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r24, the environment in DXVK mode with Windows 7 and AVX advertised, the steam and vcrun2022 recipes, Emulate display mode changes on for the game, rated 5 of 5 after 5 minutes. Second report by valdroff (highball-db#413, 2026-10-08), Apple M3, macOS 27.0.1, Highball 0.10.14, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r25, the environment in Wine's own Direct3D mode with Windows 7 and AVX advertised, Emulate display mode changes on, rated 5 of 5 after 21 minutes, with a performance problem on the Wine 11 engine. Not verified by the maintainer.

Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.

Common questions

Does Battle Engine Aquila work on Mac?

Battle Engine Aquila has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
