Which renderer to use

Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.

No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.

Notes

Gets in game with high frame rates once its configuration tool and the game run the same way, and the sound is broken. The game stores the graphics card's ID from BinaryDomainConfiguration.exe and refuses to start when the game sees another one. On the default engine in D3DMetal or DXVK mode a Direct3D 9 game sees the Mac's chip with an ID that stays the same from run to run, while Wine's own Direct3D and the Wine 11 engine show a different card (measured on an M4, 2026-10-05). The player added the configuration tool to the environment's programs so both run in the same mode. The CRI audio middleware loads XAudio 2.7, which the Linux fix replaces with Microsoft's own; the 'Microsoft XAudio 2.7 and XACT' dependency does that here, and on Binary Domain it did not stop the stutter (the player still hears and sees it, 0.10.9).

Provenance

Reported by udance4ever (highball-db#345, 2026-10-05), Apple M1, macOS 27.0.1, Highball 0.10.8, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r21, the environment in D3DMetal mode (Direct3D 9 runs through DXVK there), with .NET 3.5 SP1, .NET 4.8, SDL controllers, core fonts and the Visual C++ runtimes installed. Reaches the game and plays, but the sound is broken. Not verified by the maintainer.

Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.

Common questions

Does Binary Domain work on Mac?

Binary Domain has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.

Which renderer should I use for Binary Domain?

D3DMetal. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records D3DMetal for Binary Domain. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
