Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Reported | community reports |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
Unreal Engine 5 first-person shooter, Direct3D 12 only, and the report ran it on D3DMetal (from 0.9.26 Play picks that for Unreal 5 builds on its own). On a base M5 the one report gets about 40 to 50 fps on the training ground and around 30 fps online with every setting low, TSR at Quality, and the render resolution at half the display's native. Playable, but the reporter's own verdict is that a shooter at 30 to 40 fps is not the experience of better hardware. The game asks to install its Unreal prerequisites at every launch; agreeing to every prompt, including the ones labelled uninstall, lets it run (0.9.25 and later adopt runtimes a game installs, which may end the repeat prompts). A second report, on an M2 MacBook Air with the Wine 11 engine, averages about 23 fps with stretches of 30 to 45, and hits a problem the first did not: gunfire sets off an audio feedback loop and the frame rate sinks gradually after it. Their audio DLL overrides were an attempt against it, not a fix.
Provenance
Reported by phmuni (highball-db#121, 2026-09-18): rated 3, playable with workarounds, Apple M5 (base), macOS 27.0, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r3, Highball 0.9.23, about 15 minutes played through Highball including online matches. Renderer D3DMetal, added in a follow-up comment. Not run here. zn2m4swhkv-sys (highball-db#241, 2026-09-28): rated 3, playable with workarounds, Apple M2 24 GB MacBook Air, macOS 27, Highball 0.9.38, engine x64-crossover26.3-r12 (r10 and r12 ran best for them), D3DMetal, frame rate limit 120 (uncapped crashed), Windows 11, AVX advertised, a long list of audio DLL overrides tried against the audio problem.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Bodycam work on Mac?
Bodycam has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
Which renderer should I use for Bodycam?
D3DMetal. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records D3DMetal for Bodycam. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
