Which renderer to use

Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.

No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.

Notes

A 2007 Direct3D 9 real-time strategy game. Reported perfect after 25 minutes on an M2 with the environment on DXMT on the Wine 11 engine r12. DXMT itself handles Direct3D 10 and 11 only, and on the Wine 11 engine Highball's automatic modes leave Direct3D 9 to Wine's own Direct3D (the rule the Fallout: New Vegas report confirmed in its log), so that is most likely what drew the game, an inference from the app's rule rather than from this reporter's log. On the default Wine 10 engine the same mode attaches DXVK's Direct3D 9 instead, and whether the game runs there was not reported. No frame rate was given and nothing was measured here.

Provenance

Reported by Bokka1980 (highball-db#305, 2026-10-04), Apple M2, macOS 27.0.1, Highball 0.9.39, engine x64-crossover26.3-r12 (the Wine 11 engine), DXMT as the environment's mode, no recipes listed, rated 5 of 5 after 25 minutes. Not verified by the maintainer.

Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.

Common questions

Does Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars work on Mac?

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.

Which renderer should I use for Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars?

DXMT. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records DXMT for Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
