Which renderer to use

Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.

No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.

Notes

The game asks Windows for a display mode the Mac doesn't offer, Wine refuses, and the game stops with 'Error - unable to set video mode'. The reporter got it running with Emulate display mode changes on for the game (Wine pretends the mode changed and scales the picture) and the D3DMetal graphics mode, whose 32-bit DirectDraw is cnc-ddraw. Which of the two did it was not separated, so the page sets no mode. No measurement here yet.

Provenance

Reported by valdroff (highball-db#365, 2026-10-06), Apple M3, macOS 27.0.1, Highball 0.10.12, the Steam release: it did not start ('Error - unable to set video mode') on engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r22 in Wine's own Direct3D mode, Windows 7, AVX advertised. Confirmed working on 2026-10-08 with Emulate display mode changes on for the game and the environment in D3DMetal mode. Not verified by the maintainer.

Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.

Common questions

Does Command & Conquer Red Alert™ 2 and Yuri’s Revenge™ work on Mac?

Command & Conquer Red Alert™ 2 and Yuri’s Revenge™ has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
