Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Reported | community reports |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
Direct3D 12, so D3DMetal. Does not start on the default engine for the one report so far (no window, the process idle). Overwatch 2 behaves the same on Highball's engines, no window on the default engine and playable on the Wine 11 engine, which is the next thing to try here, with DXMT_ALLOW_CROSS_PROCESS_SWAPCHAIN=1 in the environment so Battle.net's own window does not crash there (the battle-net recipe sets it).
Known issues
Never opens a window on the default engine, the game process idle (M5, macOS 27.0.1)
What helps none confirmed. Untested: the Wine 11 engine (environment settings, Advanced, Engine) with DXMT_ALLOW_CROSS_PROCESS_SWAPCHAIN=1. On the Wine 11 engine Battle.net itself crashed after login for a second player (highball#371)
Why not diagnosed. Blizzard games hit a Rosetta 2 deadlock from January 2026, CodeWeavers reports Diablo IV and Overwatch running again with macOS 26.5 on CrossOver 26.1 and later, and Overwatch 2 needs the Wine 11 engine on Highball
Provenance
Reported by JabesRUS (highball#371, 2026-10-17) for the Battle.net copy, Apple M5, macOS 27.0.1, Highball 0.10.15: on the default engine (x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r26 and r27) with D3DMetal the game process sits idle after start and never opens a window; on the Wine 11 engine r23 Battle.net itself crashed (int3 in its embedded browser). Background, not measured here: Blizzard's January 2026 update tripped a Rosetta 2 deadlock that also hit Diablo IV and Overwatch 2 (Apple Developer Forums thread 814383, FB15880492 and FB21763885), and CodeWeavers reports Diablo IV and Overwatch running again on CrossOver 26.1 with macOS 26.5. Not verified by the maintainer. Swiss-Mac-User (highball#371, 2026-10-18), Apple M5 Pro, macOS 27.2, Highball 0.10.19: on the Wine 11 engine with D3DMetal and DXMT_ALLOW_CROSS_PROCESS_SWAPCHAIN=1, Battle.net crashed after login with repeated crash dialogs, so D2R could not be started there.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Diablo II: Resurrected work on Mac?
Diablo II: Resurrected has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
Which renderer should I use for Diablo II: Resurrected?
D3DMetal. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records D3DMetal for Diablo II: Resurrected. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
