Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Untested | no report yet — send one |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
An OpenGL game. On the stock engine it crashes at startup through a null OpenGL function pointer (GLEW's glClearDepthf, a function macOS's own OpenGL does not provide). The reporter got it running by placing Mesa's Windows OpenGL build (opengl32.dll and libgallium_wgl.dll from mesa-dist-win 26.2.0) beside the game's exe with a per-exe native override for opengl32, launched through Steam with sync off. That is a hand edit Highball does not ship; it points at the same OpenGL gap as Mewgenics and at Mesa as the way to close it. Measured here on 2026-09-16: Mesa's zink driver refuses MoltenVK (no nullDescriptor), so the workaround runs on llvmpipe, software rendering on the CPU. Fine for this board game, not for anything heavier. Performance was not measured.
Provenance
Reported by JingKritsada (highball-db#87, 2026-09-16), Apple M3, macOS 27, Highball 0.9.19, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r3, rated 5 of 5 provisionally after a workaround: the game launches, displays and responds to input, extended play and frame rate not verified. Not verified by the maintainer.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Dokapon Kingdom: Connect work on Mac?
Dokapon Kingdom: Connect has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
Which renderer should I use for Dokapon Kingdom: Connect?
wined3d. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records wined3d for Dokapon Kingdom: Connect. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
