Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Untested | no report yet — send one |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
Runs on the default engine on an M1 Pro, but saving breaks after the first run for the one report so far. The game is built on Unity, and on the default Wine 10 engine Unity's runtime reads the wrong value when Windows reports a file error, so a normal 'file not found' while saving can become a garbage error. The Wine 11 engines carry the fix (engine patch 0011, made for The Last Flame). That this is the cause here is not confirmed yet. Nothing was measured here.
Known issues
No new save can be created after the first run
What helps untested: the Wine 11 engine (the environment's settings, Advanced, Engine)
Why most likely Unity's runtime misreading Windows file errors on the default engine (engine patch 0011, Wine 11 only); not confirmed for this game
Provenance
Reported by NanoAnubis (highball#517, 2026-10-26), Apple M1 Pro, macOS 27.0.1, Highball 0.10.22, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r28, D3DMetal and DXVK tried: the game runs fine, but after the first run no new save can be created, and the game's own log points at an error while handling save files. Not verified by the maintainer.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Endless Legend 2 work on Mac?
Endless Legend 2 has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
