Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Reported | community reports |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
An Unreal Engine game, Direct3D 11 or 12 by its store page. Reported perfect three times on D3DMetal, the longest a four and a half hour session on an M4 Pro on the default engine r11, and a two-minute look on an M4 Max on macOS 15.8 with engine r17. Which of the game's two Direct3D paths ran under D3DMetal is not known and nobody tried DXMT, so the mode here is the one that worked rather than a comparison. The first reporter's winhttp override and the third reporter's AVX and D3DM_SUPPORT_DXR settings were in place in the working runs, whether any of them is needed is not known, and the hogwarts-legacy recipe in that environment belongs to another game. No frame rate was given and nothing was measured here.
Provenance
Reported by verylovestars (highball-db#296 and highball-db#299, 2026-10-03), Apple M4 Pro, macOS 27.0.1, Highball 0.9.39, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r11, D3DMetal as the environment's mode with a winhttp=n DLL override, recipes steam and vcrun2022, rated 5 of 5 after 5 minutes and again after 272 minutes (the second report's renderer field says DXMT while its environment line says D3DMetal, this row goes by the environment). A third report by WaterWANG-1014 (highball-db#302, 2026-10-04), Apple M4 Max, macOS 15.8, Highball 0.10.2, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r17, D3DMetal with AVX advertised and D3DM_SUPPORT_DXR=0, recipes steam, hogwarts-legacy and vcrun2022, rated 5 of 5 after 2 minutes. Not verified by the maintainer.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Escape the Backrooms work on Mac?
Escape the Backrooms has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
Which renderer should I use for Escape the Backrooms?
D3DMetal. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records D3DMetal for Escape the Backrooms. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
