Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Untested | no report yet — send one |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
Playable with workarounds for the one report so far (M1, default engine, DXVK's Direct3D 9). Link the DLLs from Fahrenheit.exe.local next to Fahrenheit.exe first (Wine's loader does not search that folder). Then choose In a Window in the pre-launch settings: fullscreen breaks on the first menu click. The window opens small, click its title bar so it has focus, use the keyboard to create a login and to enable the gamepad in Options, Controls, then play with a gamepad. The mouse cannot be used, its cursor stays at the screen's edge. A DualSense needs Steam Input on, or the right stick does nothing. Steam's Mac version is 32-bit and no longer runs on macOS, so Highball installs the Windows one. Nothing was measured here.
Known issues
The game stops before opening a window in every graphics mode, its own DLLs not found
What helps by hand, link each DLL from Fahrenheit.exe.local next to Fahrenheit.exe (for x in Fahrenheit.exe.local/*.dll; do ln -s "$x" .; done in the game folder). Support for the folder in Highball's engines is planned
Why the DLLs sit in Fahrenheit.exe.local, Windows' DLL redirection folder, which Wine's loader does not search (also missing upstream, checked 2026-10-26)
The first menu click switches the game to 1024x768 and then it fails with 'A DirectX 9.0c or higher compliant video card is needed' or 'D3D ERROR! Fail to create texture surface' (an M1, DXVK's Direct3D 9, highball-db#700)
What helps none confirmed. Emulate display mode changes got the reporter in once, not reliably
Why not diagnosed: opening a menu makes the game rebuild its Direct3D 9 device for its own fullscreen mode, and the device or its textures fail to create. In a window instead, the mouse sticks to the screen's right edge
A DirectX 9 warning dialog at start
What helps dismiss it, the game goes on
Why not diagnosed
In a window the mouse cursor sticks to the screen's edge and the mouse cannot be used
What helps play with the keyboard and a gamepad: enable the gamepad in Options, Controls with the arrow keys
Why not diagnosed
A DualSense's right stick does nothing
What helps turn Steam Input on for the game. The XInputPlus route on PCGamingWiki did not help the reporter
Why the game reads the pad through XInput
Provenance
Reported by udance4ever (highball-db#700, 2026-10-26), Apple M1, macOS 27.0.1, Highball 0.10.22, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r28, in a Steam library on an external drive (its own, not the Mac Steam's): does not launch in DXMT, DXVK or D3DMetal. The DXMT and DXVK logs show Fahrenheit.exe failing to load its own DLLs (Qt5, SDL2, libgcc_s_dw2-1, libstdc++-6), which were not beside it. The reporter then found them in a Fahrenheit.exe.local folder next to the exe, Windows' DLL redirection, which Wine's loader does not look in; with the DLLs linked next to the exe the game reached gameplay, needing Emulate display mode changes to keep its resolution and a DirectX 9 warning dismissed. Not verified by the maintainer. Later the same day the reporter played it through the tutorial with a working setup: In a Window in the pre-launch settings, the keyboard to get through login and enable the gamepad in Options, Controls, and Steam Input on for a DualSense.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Remastered work on Mac?
Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Remastered has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
