Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Reported | community reports |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
Direct3D 12, so D3DMetal. A detailed report on an M4 gets past startup, the Xbox sign-in and into free roam and the benchmark on both Wine 11 engines, but the game is not playable: every piece of scenery draws tilted and a Fatal Error ends it within minutes. Getting that far took a graphics card disguise and a hand-made way around the black sign-in window, see the known issues. Not measured by the maintainer.
Known issues
The game crashes at startup during graphics setup (a read of address 0x10 in ForzaHorizon5.exe)
What helps report another card with the variables D3DM_VENDOR_ID, D3DM_DEVICE_ID and D3DM_DEVICE_DESCRIPTION (the reporter used an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, 0x10de and 0x2503, or an Intel Arc A750, 0x8086 and 0x56a1)
Why the default graphics card D3DMetal reports (AMD), the same as Forza Horizon 6
The Xbox sign-in window is black
What helps none built in. The reporter replaced msedgewebview2.exe with a stand-in that drops the D3DMetal folders from WINEDLLPATH_PREPEND and opens a remote debugging port, then signed in from a Mac browser with a password (passkeys cannot work under Wine)
Why the game's own WebView2 (a fixed runtime, 91.0.864.67) does not draw under D3DMetal, like Steam's window
All scenery (trees, poles, buildings) draws tilted, only the car and the road look right (highball-db#386)
What helps none known
Why not known. The same on D3DMetal 3 and 4, with either graphics card disguise and on the Low preset
A Fatal Error with code 0x800705aa (not enough system resources) after 37 seconds to 6 minutes of driving (highball-db#386)
What helps none known
Why not known. Graphics memory in use was only 200 MB to 1.5 GB, and one crash followed a critical section wait that timed out after 60 seconds
On DXMT the game crashes at DXGI, asking for an interface DXMT does not know ({f0db4c7f-fe5a-42a2-bd62-f2a6cf6fc83e})
What helps use D3DMetal
Why a Direct3D 12 game, which DXMT does not cover
Provenance
community consensus (AppleGamingWiki / r-macgaming / MacPlay), unverified by Highball. tusharchawre (highball-db#386, 2026-10-07): rated 2, launches but not playable, Apple M4 16 GB, macOS 27.2, Highball 0.10.13, engines x64-crossover26.3-r20 and r21, D3DMetal, Steam build 21856128, about an hour of testing.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Forza Horizon 5 work on Mac?
Forza Horizon 5 has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
Which renderer should I use for Forza Horizon 5?
D3DMetal. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records D3DMetal for Forza Horizon 5. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
