Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Reported | 1 report |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
Reported running on the Wine 11 engine (x64-crossover26.3-r27) with the environment on D3DMetal and AVX advertised, which the game needs: without it the game stops at launch asking for AVX2, F16C and FMA. On the default engine (x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r28) with D3DMetal it showed a black screen for about two minutes and crashed, after CheckFeatureSupport queries that D3DMetal did not handle (0xc06d007e). The reporter also set D3DM_ENABLE_METALFX=1 and DXMT_ENABLE_NVEXT=1, which were not shown to matter, and installed the engine with the command-line tool, while the environment's Advanced, Engine picker offers the same Wine 11 engine. The game is DirectX 12 only. No session length or frame rate was given and nothing was measured here.
Known issues
A black screen for about two minutes, then a crash, on the default engine with D3DMetal (reported on an M5 Pro, macOS 26.6.2)
What helps move the environment to the Wine 11 engine (Advanced, Engine, x64-crossover26.3, r27 or later), keep D3DMetal and turn on Advertise AVX
Why by the reporter's log, the default engine's D3DMetal does not answer some of the game's CheckFeatureSupport queries (0xc06d007e)
Provenance
Reported by Jessebnda (highball-db#596, 2026-10-20), Apple M5 Pro, macOS 26.6.2, Highball 0.10.22, engine x64-crossover26.3-r27, D3DMetal environment, msync, AVX advertised, rated 3 of 5 (playable with workarounds). Not verified by the maintainer.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does God of War Ragnarök work on Mac?
God of War Ragnarök has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
Which renderer should I use for God of War Ragnarök?
D3DMetal. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records D3DMetal for God of War Ragnarök. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
