Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Reported | 1 report |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
DirectX 12 only, so D3DMetal. Before Highball 0.9.19 it stopped at "Failed to initialize DirectX 12" on every Mac: the timestamp shim in front of D3DMetal's d3d12.dll numbered its exports from 1 and the game asks for D3D12CreateDevice by ordinal 101, so it never got a device (highball-db#48, the same bug as Path of Exile 2). Fixed in the engines shipped with 0.9.19 (r3 and r9). Do not add -dx11, the game refuses two graphics API flags and crashes at start. The recipe still advertises AVX to the game, it was on in the working run and whether it is needed is not known. A second report on an M5 with macOS 26 rates it perfect on D3DMetal, Epic copy. A third report on an M3 Pro, macOS 27.0, engine r5, rated it playable with minor issues after installing the Visual C++ runtimes; the unspecified minor issues are not recorded here. The same reporter noted the first launch failed and the second launched fine, and that the minor issues were the game's own default graphics choices and a game dialog you click OK on, not Highball.
Known issues
"Failed to initialize DirectX 12" a few seconds after launch on D3DMetal, no crash, no log (reported on an M4 Max, macOS 15.7.7)
What helps Highball 0.9.19 and its engines r3 and r9. Confirmed by the reporter
Why measured: the DirectX 12 timestamp shim exported its functions numbered from 1 and the game binds D3D12CreateDevice by ordinal 101
Crashes at second zero at fixed addresses when -dx11 is among the Steam launch options
What helps never use -dx11 with this game
Why measured from the crash context: the game adds its own DirectX 12 flag and Unreal refuses two graphics API flags
Start fails until the Microsoft Visual C++ runtimes are installed (reported on an M3 Pro, macOS 27.0)
What helps Install the Visual C++ runtimes into the environment, then launch (the reporter's step)
Why not measured here; the game's prerequisite runtimes were missing from the prefix

Reported working by WaterWANG-1014 (highball-db#48, 2026-09-15), Apple M4 Max, macOS 15.7.7, Highball 0.9.19 with the corrected DirectX 12 shim, D3DMetal, launches and runs. Not verified by the maintainer. Also reported by amoslanz44 (highball-db#80, 2026-09-16), Apple M5, macOS 26.6.2, Highball 0.9.22, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r3, D3DMetal, Epic copy, rated 5 of 5 after 7 minutes. Reported again by c2p-cmd (highball-db#138, 2026-09-19), Apple M3 Pro, macOS 27.0, Highball 0.9.28, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r5, D3DMetal, rated 4 of 5 (playable, minor issues) after 9 minutes, having installed the Visual C++ runtimes first.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Hogwarts Legacy work on Mac?
Hogwarts Legacy has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
Which renderer should I use for Hogwarts Legacy?
D3DMetal. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records D3DMetal for Hogwarts Legacy, and applying the Hogwarts Legacy recipe sets it for you.
Is there a one-click setup for Hogwarts Legacy?
Yes. Highball ships a recipe for Hogwarts Legacy that sets the tested renderer and any per-game fixes. Open the game in your Library and apply it.
