Which renderer to use

Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.

Notes

Unreal Engine 4, DirectX 11. Use D3DMetal, set by the recipe. On DXMT the game dies at start with an Unreal fatal error, CreateTexture2D failed with E_FAIL for a 1000x1000 R8G8 texture flagged D3D11_RESOURCE_MISC_SHARED, which DXMT cannot create. On DXVK it reaches the menu but the reporter found the game far too dark to play. On D3DMetal the maintainer ran the free demo (Steam 1773210) through the menus, character creation and the spawn picker with lit 3D backdrops at 45 to 57 fps fullscreen at 1728x1117 on an M1 Pro; gameplay past the spawn is not measured here yet. On engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r6 (D3DMetal from GPTK 4.0 beta 2, macOS 27 only) the demo's menu ran stable for three minutes at about a fifth to a half of r5's resident memory (260 to 700 MB against 1.26 GB) with the same GPU load; measured blind on 2026-09-19 (session locked: process, GPU load and logs, no captures), so the picture itself is not confirmed yet. Frame generation (engine r7 or later, off by default) was measured on it here on 2026-09-22, M1 Pro, macOS 27, D3DMetal at 1728x1117 on a 120 Hz display: the same spot in gameplay presents about 47 fps with it off and 63 to 74 at 2x, and it felt smooth to play, moving around.

One-click setup

Highball ships a recipe for HumanitZ: open the game in your Library and apply it. The recipe carries the tested renderer and any per-game fixes, so you don't have to reproduce them by hand. Read the recipe.

Provenance

Reported by frogkochapon (highball#95, 2026-09-14), Apple M5 Pro, macOS 26.6.2, Highball 0.9.11, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r2. Crashed on DXMT, then reached the main menu on DXVK. Not verified by the maintainer.

Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.

Common questions

Does HumanitZ work on Mac?

HumanitZ has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.

Which renderer should I use for HumanitZ?

D3DMetal. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records D3DMetal for HumanitZ, and applying the HumanitZ recipe sets it for you.

Is there a one-click setup for HumanitZ?

Yes. Highball ships a recipe for HumanitZ that sets the tested renderer and any per-game fixes. Open the game in your Library and apply it.
