Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Reported | community reports |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Untested | no report yet — send one |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
Works on DXMT. A player on an M1 Pro with 16 GB and macOS 15 finished the whole game in online co-op, hosting a friend on a Windows PC who joined through the Friend's Pass, at about 57 to 63 fps at 1080p on the default preset. An occasional 'Unable to connect to the EA Servers' message kicked them out, which Windows players see too. Joining from a Mac as the Friend's Pass guest is untested.

community consensus (AppleGamingWiki / r-macgaming / MacPlay), unverified by Highball. Reported by david0ha (highball-db#361, 2026-10-06), Apple M4 Pro, macOS 26.3, Highball 0.10.10, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r21, the environment in DXMT mode, rated 5 of 5 after 109 minutes; see also highball-db#216. alex-jke (highball-db#455, 2026-10-11), Apple M1 Pro with 16 GB, macOS 15.7.4, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r26, DXMT with msync, rated 5 of 5 after playing it start to finish in online co-op, hosting from the Mac with the game bought while a friend on a Windows PC joined through the Friend's Pass (clarified on the issue), about 57 to 63 fps at 1080p on the default preset.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does It Takes Two work on Mac?
It Takes Two has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
Which renderer should I use for It Takes Two?
DXMT. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records DXMT for It Takes Two. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
