Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Untested | no report yet — send one |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
Runs well on an M2 Air once workshop add-ons are not loaded automatically; with them the campaign froze at load on DXVK and crawled on Wine's Direct3D. The mode of the clean run is not recorded yet. A Source game, so DXVK is the expected mode.
Provenance
Reported by greph123 (highball-db#78, 2026-09-16 to 2026-09-18): Apple M2 MacBook Air with 8 GB, macOS 26.6.2, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r3, Highball 0.9.19. First rated 2, laggy on Wine's Direct3D and frozen at campaign load on DXVK; the cause was the many workshop add-ons loading, and with those off the game ran flawlessly at maximum settings at 1280x820. Mode of the clean run not stated. Not run here.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Left 4 Dead 2 work on Mac?
Left 4 Dead 2 has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
