Reported working by the community, not yet run by Highball, using the wined3d renderer. Community consensus (AppleGamingWiki, r/macgaming); unverified by Highball.

Which renderer to use

Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.

No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.

Notes

Fullscreen fails: the game asks macOS for its display mode, Wine's Mac driver refuses, and the Source engine then cannot create its Direct3D device ("Failed to create D3D device!") whatever the graphics mode. Windowed and borderless works, and the row adds -windowed -noborder to the launch. Reported playable only on Wine's Direct3D, 15 to 20 fps on low settings on an M5; the other modes ran at 3 to 5 fps for the reporter, cause not investigated. A per-game EmulateModeset registry value, as in the Five Nights at Freddy's recipe, should let fullscreen work too, untested here.

Provenance

Reported by detnarrrrrrrrr (highball#108, 2026-09-15), Apple M5, macOS 26.6.2, Highball 0.9.15, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r2: playable in a window on Wine's Direct3D at 15 to 20 fps on low settings with -w 1280 -h 720 -windowed -borderless. DXMT, DXVK and D3DMetal ran at 3 to 5 fps for the reporter. Not verified by the maintainer.

Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.

Common questions

Does Left 4 Dead work on Mac?

Left 4 Dead has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.

Which renderer should I use for Left 4 Dead?

wined3d. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records wined3d for Left 4 Dead. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
