Which renderer to use

Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.

No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.

Notes

Reported playable with workarounds on D3DMetal (Unreal Engine, Direct3D 12). The game's bundled launcher PenguinHotel.exe refuses to start with a 'Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable is required' dialog although the runtime is installed, then hangs at sign-in with a missing authentication token. The reporter got past both by setting native, builtin overrides for msvcp140, msvcp140_1, msvcp140_2, vcruntime140 and vcruntime140_1 (the same overrides Highball's Visual C++ component sets when it installs the runtime itself) and by pointing Steam's launch options straight at Chameleon/Binaries/Win64/PenguinHotel-Win64-Shipping.exe with %command% -windowed, which skips the launcher. Only one minute played, so the game starting and rendering is all this says. No measurement here yet.

Provenance

Reported by moffatluke (highball-db#105, 2026-09-17), Apple M5 Pro, macOS 27.0 as entered, Highball 0.9.19, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r3, D3DMetal (per the follow-up), rated 3 of 5 (playable with workarounds) after 1 minute. Not verified by the maintainer.

Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.

Common questions

Does MECCHA CHAMELEON work on Mac?

MECCHA CHAMELEON has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.

Which renderer should I use for MECCHA CHAMELEON?

D3DMetal. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records D3DMetal for MECCHA CHAMELEON. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
