Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Reported | community reports |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
Capcom's RE Engine, DirectX 12. On an M1 Pro it stops with an unsupported graphics card error, because D3DMetal answers no to the game's check for 64-bit atomics on descriptor heap resources (D3D12 OPTIONS11), the same check that blocks Kunitsu-Gami. A player got it running, through its benchmark at 32 fps, by patching D3DMetal itself so the check says yes. Highball cannot ship a modified D3DMetal, so out of the box it does not start on an M1. Whether D3DMetal says yes on newer chips is not known yet.
Known issues
Unsupported graphics card error at start, then the game quits (M1 Pro)
What helps none in Highball yet. A player patched D3DMetal's check and the game then ran its benchmark, which suggests a shim that answers yes for this game would do
Why D3DMetal reports AtomicInt64OnDescriptorHeapResourceSupported as false, and the game requires it
Provenance
Reported by flacknabe-cpu (highball-db#450, 2026-10-11), Apple M1 Pro, macOS 26.7, Highball 0.10.14, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r24, the game on D3DMetal in a DXMT environment, 60 fps cap, rated 3 of 5 after 19 minutes, the game's benchmark at 11341 points and 32 fps on average with a modified D3DMetal. Not verified by the maintainer.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Onimusha: Way of the Sword Demo work on Mac?
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Demo has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
Which renderer should I use for Onimusha: Way of the Sword Demo?
D3DMetal. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records D3DMetal for Onimusha: Way of the Sword Demo. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
