Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Reported | named in upstream release notes |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Untested | no report yet — send one |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
missing character fixed (the changelog's words). One player report on an M5 rates it perfect over 51 minutes on DXMT on the default engine, in an environment with every sync primitive turned off and a 120 fps cap; none of those settings is known to be needed. No frame rate was given and nothing was measured here.
Provenance
Named in the DXMT changelog v0.73 (github.com/3Shain/dxmt/releases), and since reported by a player: 3zoozbash (highball-db#274, 2026-10-02), Apple M5, macOS 27.2 as entered, Highball 0.9.39, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r11, DXMT, rated 5 of 5 after 51 minutes, in an environment with sync off (WINEESYNC=0, WINEMSYNC=0), scale 144 dpi, the Metal HUD on, a 120 fps cap and DXMT_ALLOW_CROSS_PROCESS_SWAPCHAIN=1, recipes ea-app, steam, vcrun2022. Not run here.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Ori and the Will of the Wisps work on Mac?
Ori and the Will of the Wisps has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. It is named as working or fixed in upstream release notes. Highball has not run it, so treat this as a strong report rather than a verified result.
Which renderer should I use for Ori and the Will of the Wisps?
DXMT. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records DXMT for Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
