Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Reported | 1 report |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Untested | no report yet — send one |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
Direct3D 9 game. On the shipped engine it froze on the pre-race screen after the track loaded with VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST. The reporter replaced the engine's Direct3D 9 DLL (DXVK-Kegworks 1.10.4, frameworks/renderer/d9vk/wine/x86_64-windows/d3d9.dll) with the d3d9.dll from DXVK 3.1.1 and the game then played, practice and races with AI, smooth with minor stutter. That swap is a hand edit of the engine today; shipping a newer Direct3D 9 layer is an engine decision that needs the other Direct3D 9 games rechecked (Portal, Portal 2, Five Nights at Freddy's). Correction 2026-09-18: the reporter's working d3d9.dll prints 'DXVK: v3.1+' with gcc 16.1.0, which is the string of the withdrawn r4 engine's dgVoodoo-free DXVK-macOS 3.1 fork, not of the official DXVK 3.1.1 (which prints 'v3.1.1' and refuses MoltenVK for geometry shaders on every Mac tested). So the layer that renders RaceRoom for him is the fork that froze FNAF and drew RaceRoom in grayscale for another reporter on r4.

Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does RaceRoom Racing Experience work on Mac?
RaceRoom Racing Experience has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
Which renderer should I use for RaceRoom Racing Experience?
DXVK. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records DXVK for RaceRoom Racing Experience, and applying the RaceRoom Racing Experience recipe sets it for you.
Is there a one-click setup for RaceRoom Racing Experience?
Yes. Highball ships a recipe for RaceRoom Racing Experience that sets the tested renderer and any per-game fixes. Open the game in your Library and apply it.
