Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Reported | community reports |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
The 2023 remake. RE Engine and Direct3D 12, so D3DMetal. On an M2 MacBook Air at 1280x832 with the in-game cap at 60, mostly mid settings, ray tracing and FSR off, it runs at 30 to 40 fps as the Mac heats up. Looking through a sniper scope drops about 10 fps for a while. An 8BitDo SN30 Pro in X-input mode works, rumble included. The reporter also set Wine's debug output off (WINEDEBUG=-all), D3DM_MTL4=1, D3DM_ENABLE_METALFX=1 and a list of DLL overrides, and says stutters on loud sounds such as shotgun fire and explosions went away after that. None of it was tested here, so it is not part of the setup Highball applies.
Provenance
Reported by zn2m4swhkv-sys (highball-db#269, 2026-10-01), MacBook Air M2 with 24 GB, macOS 27.0.1, Highball 0.10.0, D3DMetal, rated 4 of 5 with no length limit on play. The engine was a GPTK 4 revision (x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r14 or r16) or x64-crossover26.3-r12, the reporter is not sure which. Not verified by the maintainer.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Resident Evil 4 work on Mac?
Resident Evil 4 has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
Which renderer should I use for Resident Evil 4?
D3DMetal. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records D3DMetal for Resident Evil 4. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
