Which renderer to use

Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.

No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.

Notes

RE Engine, Direct3D 12 only, so D3DMetal. Two things happen on a first launch. First, Capcom's own first-run notice, a small 'CAPCOM InstallerMessage' window saying a 'VIDEO CODEC: WMVideo Decoder' must be installed: it is an unconditional notice, not a check (the program has no codec or registry test in it), so tick 'I accept the above message' and press Exit, and Steam starts the game. Second, the game then sits on a black screen with the process alive at under one percent CPU: its intro is a WMV video played through Wine's Windows Media reader, and on this engine that reader deadlocks. Measured with GStreamer's own debug log: the ASF demuxer fills one stream's queue to its 8 MB cap ('Queue is filled, signalling overrun') while the other stream never gets past preroll, and the demuxer blocks pushing to the full queue for as long as you wait. No renderer setting changes it (D3DMetal with MetalFX off measured the same). The Wine 11 engine was not exercised for this game here (the scripted Steam relaunch handshake got in the way), but it would not matter: the intro hang is in Wine's media reader, not the renderer or the Wine version. No fix yet; this is engine work in Wine's winegstreamer reader, and it affects the other RE Engine titles that play WMV intros the same way.

Provenance

Reported by detnarrrrrrrrr (highball#154, 2026-09-18): stops right after the Bethesda-style logo splash on D3DMetal, Apple M5, macOS 27.0, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r3, Highball 0.9.23. Reproduced by the maintainer with the free Gold Edition Gameplay Demo (Steam 2062120) on 2026-09-18, Apple M1 Pro, macOS 26.6.2, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r5, D3DMetal.

Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.

Common questions

Does Resident Evil Village work on Mac?

Resident Evil Village has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.

Which renderer should I use for Resident Evil Village?

D3DMetal. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records D3DMetal for Resident Evil Village. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
