Which renderer to use
Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.
| Renderer | Verdict | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| DXVKDirect3D 9-11 over Vulkan | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| DXMTDirect3D 11 over Metal | Untested | no report yet — send one |
| D3DMetalApple's Game Porting Toolkit | Untested | no report yet — send one |
No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.
Notes
Does not run. The game (GLFW and GLAD) asks for a legacy OpenGL context, gets the 2.1 context macOS allows for those, and then quits because it needs OpenGL 3.0 features (vertex buffer objects, 'needs OpenGL VBO support'). Apple only offers OpenGL above 2.1 as a core profile, which a program has to ask for, and the game asks for the old kind. Nothing in Highball's engines or recipes changes that: the CX_FWD_COMPAT_GL_CTX setting only helps programs that ask for 3.2 or newer. A software OpenGL (Mesa's llvmpipe) inside the environment is the only known way around it for games like this, not something Highball ships.
Known issues
Exits at startup; the game's data/log.txt says 'needs OpenGL VBO support', with GLAD_GL_VERSION_3_0 0 in a 2.1 context
What helps none in Highball
Why macOS gives a legacy OpenGL context only at version 2.1, and the game asks for a legacy context then requires 3.0
Provenance
Reported by m0vi0 (highball-db#499, 2026-10-15), Apple M5, macOS 26.6.2, Highball 0.10.15, the default engine r26 and the Wine 11 engine r23, D3DMetal and DXMT modes: the game exits about ten seconds after starting on every one of them. Not verified by the maintainer.
Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.
Common questions
Does Skillshot City work on Mac?
Skillshot City has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.
