Which renderer to use

Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.

No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.

Notes

Reported playable with workarounds at a low frame rate on an M2, an Unreal Engine game. The player's setup: the D3DMetal 4 engine r20 with D3DM_MTL4=1 (Metal 4 back end, which the engine turns off by default because it stops some Unreal 5 games) and D3DM_ENABLE_METALFX=1, nvapi64,nvngx=n,b so the game's DLSS option maps to MetalFX, Windows 11, AVX advertised, a 120 fps cap in Highball with the real cap set in game, and Engine.ini settings under AppData/Local/TankHead/Saved/Config/Windows (r.GTSyncType=1, r.OneFrameThreadLag=0, s.AsyncLoadingThreadEnabled=1, r.ShaderPipelineCache.Enabled=1 with BatchSize 10, fx.MaxNiagaraCPUParticlesPerEmitter=0, r.Tonemapper.Quality=1, r.SSR.Quality=1). Which of these matter was not tested here.

Provenance

Reported by zn2m4swhkv-sys (highball-db#348, 2026-10-05), a copy from outside Steam in its own environment, Apple M2, macOS 27.0.1, Highball 0.10.8, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r20 (D3DMetal 4), rated 3 of 5. Not verified by the maintainer.

Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.

Common questions

Does TankHead work on Mac?

TankHead has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.

Which renderer should I use for TankHead?

D3DMetal. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records D3DMetal for TankHead. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
