Which renderer to use

Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.

No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.

Notes

A free, unofficial Ultima Online server with its own launcher, a custom ClassicUO client and Razor. Reported perfect on an M3 Pro with DXMT. Setup by the reporter: a new environment, run Outlands.exe from patch.uooutlands.com/download as a Windows program with the default folder, Verify, then Play Now, and pin the installed Outlands.exe (not ClassicUO.exe) so the launcher keeps patching. No .NET install is needed, the launcher bundles its own. For a sharp picture on a Retina or 4K display at 2x, set the environment's scale to 200% (192 dpi) and ClassicUO's Display Scale to twice the usual value. FNA3D runs on Direct3D 11 through DXMT at about half of one CPU core.

Provenance

Reported by stefankuksenko (highball-db#727, 2026-10-27), Apple M3 Pro, macOS 27.0.1, Highball 0.10.22, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r28, DXMT, rated 5 of 5 after 25 minutes. Not verified by the maintainer.

Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.

Common questions

Does Ultima Online: Outlands work on Mac?

Ultima Online: Outlands has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.

Which renderer should I use for Ultima Online: Outlands?

DXMT. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records DXMT for Ultima Online: Outlands. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
