Which renderer to use

Highball can run each game through three different Direct3D translation layers. This is what the database knows for this title — empty rows are open questions, not failures.

No dated Highball run yet. When one lands it records the renderer, the engine build and the macOS version it was seen on — which is what stops a verdict quietly rotting. Send one.

Notes

A Clickteam Fusion Direct3D 9 game, free on Steam. Reported to run only on Wine's own Direct3D, so that is the mode Highball picks for it. Gameplay runs well there and the menu is slow, which turning off Visual Effects in the game's main menu helps, by the second reporter's account. On DXVK's Direct3D 9 the loading screen is a slideshow and the menu never appears. Nothing was measured here.

Provenance

Reported not working by OneKQuad (highball#226, 2026-09-30), Apple A18 Pro, macOS 27.0, Highball 0.9.39, engine x64-sikarugir10.0_6-r11, DXMT mode, which runs Direct3D 9 through DXVK-Kegworks 1.10.4 on that engine. matiasmg-ok (same thread, 2026-09-30) plays it on an M4 MacBook Pro with Wine's own Direct3D and could not get D3DMetal or any other mode to run it. Not verified by the maintainer.

Before installing anything, it is worth checking whether the game already ships a native Mac build.

Common questions

Does Ultimate Custom Night work on Mac?

Ultimate Custom Night has no native Mac build, but it is reported to run on Apple Silicon through Highball, a free open-source compatibility layer. This comes from community reports rather than a Highball test run, so treat it as a reasonable expectation rather than a guarantee.

Which renderer should I use for Ultimate Custom Night?

wined3d. Highball can translate Direct3D through DXVK, DXMT or Apple's D3DMetal, and the right choice varies by game. The database records wined3d for Ultimate Custom Night. Highball uses it automatically when the game has a row; to set it by hand, open Settings, then Environments.
